Crane & Mast in motion

The mast/crane combination is in the final stages of completion. Time has been taken to ensure all the safety features are in place before inital testing.

Das Mastsystem ist nun in der Endphase der Fertigstellung. Viel Zeit wurde auf die Sicherheit verwendet. Nach der CE Abnahme koennen wir dann geplant im Jannuar 2009 mit Aufnahmen in ausgewaehlten Objekten beginnen.


With the adjustments made from the factory tests we will soon announce an open day for anyone
interested in seeing this new device in operation.

Nach den letzten Aenderungen die sich aus den Test ergeben, koennen wir bald unser Mast System in der Praxis vorstellen. Dazu sind alle Interessierte eingeladen.

Here you can see the problems with the dark glossy soot deposits from the constant incense stick burning.
The photographic documentation of these paintings and figures requires careful lighting control and exposure to enable the conservator to carry out mapping for damage assessment and treatments.

Teaching in Taiwan

A short photographic course for the conservation students at the Tainan National University of the Arts



After the theory the students then practiced with lighting and camera control. In this image a few of the students decided to take a group shot .... apparently to show depth of field.

From 20 to 22 November 2008, the European specialist professionals will be back in Leipzig to find out more in an international context about innovative and economic solutions.
As a platform for heritage conservation, restoration and the renovation of old buildings, denkmal is the meeting place among others for architects, restorers, skill craftsmen and conservationists, but also for investors and building owners and developers.

Als Plattform für Denkmalpflege, Restaurierung und Altbausanierung ist die denkmal der Treffpunkt u.a. für Architekten, Restauratoren, Handwerker, Denkmalpfleger, aber auch für Investoren und Bauherren.

Taiwan Press

On a recent visit to Taiwan we were photographed by the press while working in one of the Temples. I assume the text is accurate but at least they spelled my name correctly.

Auf einem unseren letzten Besuche in Taiwan wurden wir von der Presse fotografiert bei der Arbeit in einem Tempel. Ich nehme an, dass der Text korrekt ist, mein Name ist zumindest richtig geschrieben.

Black Magic - Manfrotto

Manfrotto has a recent addition to its high rise lighting stands. 

The Black Magic has the capability to go to a height of 5.5m

Manfrotto hat einen Neuzugang zu ihren hohen Beleuchtungsstativen, das auch als Kamerastativ adaptiert werden kann. Das Black Magic kann bis zu einer Höhe von 5,5m ausgefahren werden.

                                          

It compacts down to 1.65m, can easily be set up and maneuvered. 

Im eingefahrenen Zustand ist es nur noch 1,65m hoch, kann einfach bewegt und auf- und abgebaut werden.

The cost is below €2000 which makes it and attractive alternative to a small scaffold. It also has a payload of 200Kg!

Die Kosten unter 2000€ machen es zu einer atraktiven Alternative zu einem kleinem Gerüst.

Rucker aerospace - Rücker aerospace

Expanding our range of services, or rather showing our range we photographed the management and staff at Rucker aerospace 

An international company with over 2500 people in its employ. Our aim was to show the professional and friendly side of this office. The office had a really nice atmosphere. 

We set up our Broncolor flash head behind a 2m x 2m diffusion screen, this gave an even light but also eliminated the reflections in the glass, we also had a fill card on camera right. A grey background was place behind the glass to eliminate the office in the background giving a cleaner look to the image. 

Um unser Aufgabenfeld zu erweitern oder vielmehr um unser breites Spektrum zu zeigen haben wir die Leitung und Mitarbeiter von Rucker aerospace fotografiert.

Rücker aerospace ist eine internationale Firma mit über 2500 Angestellten. Unser Ziel war die professionelle und freundliche Seite des Büros zu zeigen. Es herrschte eine nette Arbeitsatmosphäre.

Wir haben unsere Broncolor Blitzlampe hinter einen 2mx2m Diffuser Schirm gestellt um eine ausgeglichene Beleuchtung zu erzielen und Reflexe auszuschließen. Auf der rechten Seite hatten wir einen Reflektor. Ein grauer Hintergrund wurde hinter die Glasscheibe gestellt um ein klares Bild zu erhalten.

Königshofen : More detail ?- go further away!

Königshofen  a.d. Heide, Ev-Luth. Marienmünster

Sometimes its a backwards way of thinking in photography. This recent job called for rectified images, however the tower was completely surrounded by trees and buildings to make any sensible images near to the church. There was no budget or time to call in a cherry picker to gain the height required so by moving further away and taking the images between the buildings and trees we came to a reasonable compromise.

In der Fotografie muss man sich den Örtlichkeiten anpassen.

Unsere jüngste Arbeit war die fotografische Dokumentation der Turmfassaden des Marienmünsters. Die spätgotische Kirche mit dem hohen Turm ist jedoch komplett mit Gebäuden und Bäumen umgeben, sodass aus der Nähe keine rektifizierten Aufnahmen erstellt werden konnten. Ferner war keine Zeit und kein Budget um einen Hubwagen zu bekommen zum Erreichen der notwendigen Höhe. Indem wir die Fotos  aus der Ferne durch die Häuser und Bäume aufnahmen, konnten wir einen guten Kompromiss erreichen.

Scale is the key to this, or rather image scale. We used a long focal length lens for this, a Canon 70-200 f-2.8L USM IS, this gave a good image scale to work from on most of the facades. The further away you are able to get the shallower the angle. On two sides of the tower we had to go to a 400mm lens by using a 2x converter. Quality is obviously not as good as a standard lens taken a few meters away parallel to the wall but for mapping the stones this will easily go to an A3 print and you will see all of the stone detail.

Dabei ist der Maßstab ausschlaggebend. Mit einer langen Brennweite Canon 70-200 f2.8L USM IS konnten wir für die meisten der Fassaden einen guten Maßstab erzielen. Je weiter man sich vom Objekt entfernt, desto flacher ist der Aufnahmewinkel. Bei zwei Seiten des Turmes mussten wir eine 400mm Brenweite verwenden, indem wir einen 2x Konverter einsetzten. Die Qualität ist natürlich nicht so gut wie bei Aufnahmen mit einer Festbrennweite aus wenigen Metern Entfernung parallell zur Mauer. Unsere Aufnahmen lassen sich aber leicht bis zu A3 in hoher Qualität ausdrucken und lassen für die digitale Kartierung der Restauratoren jedes Detail der Steinmauer erkennen.

Archaeology - Archäologie

Part of our work takes us to archaeological sites. Here is an overview of a dig at Oberelchingen in Germany of a medieval aged house which was part of the monastery.

Ein Teil unserer  Arbeit führt uns auf Archäologische Grabungen. Hier sehen sie in der Übersicht der Grabung in Oberelchingen (LK NU) ein mittelalterliches Haus, Teil der ehemaligen Klosteranlange.

Detailed record photography for most of these walls were taken. We decided to use a portable flash in a soft-box, this would give an even illumination enabling the archaeologists to see all the detail.

Von den meisten Wänden wurden detailierte Dokumentationsaufnahmen erstellt. Wir haben uns entschieden einen Handblitz mit einer Softbox zu verwenden. Diese gleichmässige Beleuchtung ermöglicht den Archäologen alle Details zu sehen.

Hasselblad H3DII-50

Hasselblad have announced the new 50Mpixel camera. This was expected to come some day and should be available by Photokina time. This will now have the largest sensor at 36x48mm and produce 300mb per file.. so more hard disc/RAM needed to cope with these images. 

One to buy later in the year.

As easy as ABC

Forging ahead with the last pieces of the mast jigsaw we have started to put together the head for the camera etc. This head from ABC products is so fluid and easy its a joy to use. We can highly recommend them for their prompt and efficient service.

Während die letzten Arbeiten am Mast vorangetrieben werden, haben wir angefangen den ferngesteuerten Kamerakopf zu montieren. Dieser Kopf von ABC products  lässt sich so fein steuern und bedienen, dass es eine Freude ist damit zu arbeiten. Wir können die Firma auch für Ihren schnellen und effizienten Service empfehlen.

In these images you can see the Hasselblad attached to the head and the joystick controller to operate it remotely.

Die Aufnahme zeigt die Hasselbladkamera auf dem 3D Kopf und den Joystick zur Fernbedienung.

 

New Mast Construction

Here you can see the long awaited mast on the workbench of Frick masts in Germany.It is not yet finished but it looks very possible it could be ready for testing by August. As you can see the winch device is on the mast, this is to be replaced by the motors soon.

Hier sehen Sie den lang erwarteten Ausleger auf der Werkbank bei Frick Gerätebau GmbH in Seligenstadt. Er ist noch nicht ganz fertig, doch es scheint möglich dass wir im August unsere Tests in ausgewählten Objekten beginnen können.

Die Winden werden noch von Handbetrieb auf Elektromotoren umgestellt.

The following images shows the mast on our specially adapted UNIC crane. This carrier will be the extremely secure base when the mast is operated but is so compact it will go through a standard doorway.

Die folgenden Aufnahmen zeigen den 25m Ausleger auf unserer adaptiertem UNIC Kran – Basis. Dieses Grundgerät ist sowohl klein und kompakt, um durch Standart Türen zu gelangen, stellt aber gleichzeitig eine sichere, flexible Basis für den Ausleger dar.

The end is in sight for this stage and we hope that after testing and certification we will be able to offer this as part of our services by September this year.

Das Ende der Entwicklung ist in Sicht. Sodass wir hoffen Ihnen September diesen Jahres, nach einer Testphase und CE Abnahme den Einsatz des Minikranes als Teil unseres Angebotes anbieten zu können.

As this is still in test mode we extended it to just 15 meters, the full extent should be nearer to 25 meters.

In diesen ersten Tests haben wir den Ausleger nur 15m ausgefahren, der Gesamtauszug wird bei 25m liegen.

Traveling - Reisen

One nice part of traveling more often are the benefits of joining a frequent flyer program. With Cathay Pacific you can join their Marco Polo club and gain entrance, after reaching the required milage or sectors, to the business lounge. This is often a peaceful place and a great time to relax and  catchup with computer work.

Flying back to Germany yesterday the lounge was particularly quiet. The other benefit for the traveling photographer is the extra weight cabin allowance; where you dont really loose sight of you precious camera equipment.

Here are a few shots to show the relaxed atmosphere in the lounge in Hong Kong before the 12 hour flight back home.

Ein angenehmer Teil des häufigen Reisens sind die Vorteile eines Vielfliegerprogramms. Mit Cathay Pacific hat man als Mitglied des Marco Polo Clubs mit entsprechenden Meilen Zutritt zu der Buisness Lounge. In der ruhigen Umgebung kann man herrlich entspannen und auch ein bischen Computerarbeit erledigen.

Auf dem Rückflug nach Deutschland war es gestern besonders ruhig. Ein weiterer großer Vorteil für den reisenden Fotograf ist das zusätzliche Handgepäck, den wer gibt schon gern seine wertvolle Kamera ausser Sichtweite.

Hier sind ein paar Aufnahmen von der entspannenden Atmosphäre in der Lounge in Hongkong vor dem 12 Stunden Heimflug.

Forbidden City in Taiwan-“Verbotene Stadt” in Taiwan

 The Longshan Temple in Lugan is called the "Forbidden City in Taiwan".

The temple is dedicated to Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy.

The temple features exquisite religious wood carvings and colourful paintings.

In this image you can see we are making a record of one of the highly decorated doors.

Der Longshan Tempel in Lugang wird die “Verbotene Stadt von Taiwan“ genannt.

Der Tempel ist Guanyin, dem Gott der Gnade geweiht.

Die Tempelausstattung zeigt feingearbeitete aufwendig gefasste Holzschnitzereien.

Die Aufnahme zeigt die fotografische Dokumentation  einer der reich bemalten Holztüren.

I thought I should post at least one image for the first blog. This is from the God Mazu celebrations in Beigang, Taiwan. Here there are many floats that carry children through the streets throwing sweets to the crowds. There are a few more images on the website.
