Dance Macabre - Totentanz

We were commissioned to photograph the ceiling and stained glass windows in the holy grave chapel in St. Michael, Bamberg for a future book publication.

The stained glass windows gave a good example of the problems that mostly always occur when we photograph glass.

To rely on daylight has its own inherent problems. Firstly if the window is north facing then daylight would be weak. If the window is in sunlight then the contrast in exposure would give problems for the latitude the camera can record. It may also not be in full sun. The problem of colour balance is an issue as this changes with the time of day or if there is a cloud that comes across. One other major problem are the adjacent buildings and scenery around the church, these will show through the glass.

By using a controlled light and shooting through a diffusion panel we can overcome all of the problems.

Wir wurden beauftragt die Stuck Decke und die Glassfenster der hl. Grab Kapelle in St. Michael, Bamberg für eine Buchveröffentlichung zu fotografieren. Die Glassmalereien sind ein gutes Beispiel für die Probleme die bei der fotografischen Aufnahme von Glass entstehen.

Sich auf das Tageslicht zu verlassen birgt verschiedenste Probleme; Die Fenster die nach Norden ausgerichtet sind, bekommen nur wenig Licht. Wenn die Fenster im vollen Sonnenlicht stehen, dann treten Schwierigkeiten mit dem Belichtungsspielraum Latitude auf, die die Kamera aufnehmen kann.Die Farbtemperatur wechselt nicht nur mit dem Wetter sondern auch mit der Tageszeit. Ein weiteres Problem stellen Gebäude und Landschaften im Hintergrund dar, die sich durch das Glass hindurch abbilden.Wir konnten alle diese Probleme überwinden, indem wir die Glassmalereien von außen mit kontrolliertem Blitzlicht durch einen großen Diffusionschirm beleuchtet haben.
